A New Chapter for Delta Township Seniors
Celebrating the Senior & Activity Center

A special day for our community
Today I had the pleasure of attending the ribbon-cutting ceremony for the newly renovated Delta Township Senior & Activity Center, located at 4344 West Michigan Avenue in the former Colt Elementary School building.
Having followed this project through its earlier construction phases, it was especially rewarding to walk through the completed facility and see the transformation firsthand.
What was once a familiar school building has been thoughtfully redesigned into a welcoming gathering place where older adults and other community members can enjoy activities, learn new skills, stay physically active, and build friendships.
The ribbon-cutting brought together township and school representatives, community leaders, and residents to celebrate a project that will serve Delta Township for many years.
As I walked through the building, I was impressed not only by the beautiful renovations but by the variety of spaces created for different interests and activities. From the welcoming lobby and comfortable lounge to the fitness facilities, teaching kitchen, and classrooms, the center has been designed with community participation in mind.
A $10 Million Investment in Our Community
Projects of this magnitude don't happen without vision, cooperation, and a commitment to improving the community.
The Senior & Activity Center became possible through a partnership between Delta Township and Waverly Community Schools, supported by $10 million in state grant funding secured through the efforts of State Representative Angela Witwer.
Representative Witwer deserves special recognition for supporting and sponsoring the state appropriation that helped make this project possible.
Waverly Community Schools provided essential leadership and partnership in transforming the former Colt Elementary building into a facility serving both educational and community needs.
Delta Township's elected officials, administration, Parks and Recreation staff, and project team also played important roles in moving the project from planning and design through construction.
What makes this especially meaningful is the shared commitment to making better use of an existing public building while creating opportunities for residents of different generations.
This is an excellent example of how partnerships between schools, local government, and state leadership can produce lasting community benefits.
Inside the New Senior & Activity Center
The renovation goes well beyond cosmetic improvements. The building has been reorganized to accommodate the different needs of participants, with new furnishings, equipment, technology, and spaces for both structured programs and informal gatherings.
A welcoming lobby and comfortable gathering spaces
One of the first things visitors will notice is the redesigned entrance and lobby, complete with a fireplace and comfortable seating.
The lobby is intended to be a place where people can gather, work on puzzles, enjoy coffee, or simply visit with friends.
Nearby, the library lounge provides another quiet, comfortable setting for reading, conversation, and relaxation. The space includes bookshelves for a free library.
Activities, games, and social connections
The new activity spaces will provide opportunities for people to come together for games, group programs, and shared meals.
A dedicated game room is designed for cards, Euchre, board games, and other social activities, with storage for equipment and supplies.
The larger activity room will accommodate senior lunches, bingo, and other gatherings, with flexible seating and updated furnishings.
These spaces are especially important because maintaining friendships and staying socially involved are valuable parts of healthy aging.

Fitness and wellness opportunities
Physical activity is another important part of the center's design.
The fitness facilities include a gymnasium for larger classes and activities, as well as a dedicated fitness room with new flooring, equipment, and windows.
One particularly interesting feature is the indoor walking route. According to the facility's tour materials, 13 laps equal one mile.
That gives participants a convenient way to stay active indoors, especially during Michigan's colder months.
The project also preserves the outdoor walking loop and includes a new pathway connection from the Colt Meadows neighborhood.
Learning, creativity, and lifelong education
The center includes updated classrooms and specialized spaces intended to encourage lifelong learning.
A general classroom will accommodate educational programs, presentations, and smaller group activities.
An Art & Tech Room will provide opportunities for creative projects, computer and technology instruction, and other hands-on activities.
There is also a teaching kitchen with six workstations, including two seated-height workstations, where participants can learn cooking techniques, participate in demonstrations, and explore new recipes.
These facilities open the door to programming that combines learning, creativity, independence, and social interaction.
A kitchen designed to support senior meals
The new serving kitchen is another important improvement.
It includes updated appliances, expanded storage, and a service area designed to support the regular senior lunch program.
Having a dedicated, modern kitchen will help the center accommodate meals and gatherings while providing staff with a more functional working environment.
A Facility Designed for Accessibility and Community Use
Beyond the rooms themselves, the renovation includes important improvements to accessibility, safety, parking, signage, and circulation throughout the building.
The facility includes dedicated and shared parking, an improved entrance, and an interior walking route that connects the different activity areas.
These features help make the center more welcoming and practical for residents with different mobility needs and interests.
The goal is not simply to provide a building, but to create an environment where people feel comfortable returning regularly and participating in community life.
What Happens Next?
Although the ribbon-cutting took place on October 13, 2026, the event was an opportunity for residents to preview the renovated facility.
Regular programming is scheduled to begin in January 2027, with a separate open house planned as the center prepares for its full opening.
The facility will become a new home for Delta Township's 39'ers programming, which serves adults age 50 and older.
Residents can look forward to opportunities involving fitness, recreation, education, games, social gatherings, and other activities as the new programming schedule is introduced by year end.
For current schedules and registration information, residents should visit the Delta Township official website.
Looking Ahead: A Conversation with Incoming Township Supervisor Andrea Cascarrilla
One of the highlights of today's ribbon-cutting celebration was having the opportunity to sit down with Andrea Cascarrilla, who will become Delta Township Supervisor on December 1, 2026. Andrea shared her enthusiasm for the new Senior & Activity Center and is particularly excited about the classes, activities, and community programs that will be scheduled in the months ahead. Our conversation reminded me that while the beautiful renovation is certainly worth celebrating, the real value of this investment will be the friendships, learning opportunities, and community connections created here for years to come.
My Perspective: More Than a Beautiful Building
One of the things I appreciate most about living in Greater Lansing is seeing communities invest in projects that improve everyday life.
As someone who works with older adults and families navigating retirement, downsizing, and other life transitions in real estate, I know how important it is to remain connected to friends, activities, and familiar surroundings.
A facility like this can make a meaningful difference.
It provides opportunities to stay active, meet new people, develop interests, and enjoy the sense of belonging that comes from being part of a community.
I also appreciate the foresight involved in bringing this project together. Rather than simply constructing another building, Delta Township and Waverly Community Schools found a way to transform an existing property into a resource that will benefit residents for years to come.
Congratulations to everyone who helped bring this vision to life, particularly Representative Angela Witwer, Delta Township officials, Waverly Community Schools, and the many individuals involved in planning, funding, designing, and completing the project.
This is the kind of community investment worth celebrating.
